THE HISTORY OF AUCTIONS

THE RISE OF THE AUCTION HOUSE

Towards the end of the 18th Century, the ‘English Auction’, an organised event as we know it today, involving an auctioneer inviting bids from the participating audience became a popular way to buy and sell.  Around this time, the uncertain political environment experienced in Europe created a large amount of items for sale and Britain was viewed as a safe place to sell them. Hosting of early auctions began at informal venues, but over time businesses became established, housing regular planned auctions.

Throughout the 19th Century, the concept of the auction house went from strength to strength, and more provincial auction firms became established , often specialist in the sale of Livestock but also diverse with a wide array of household auction items on offer.

Established in 1876, Penrith Farmers’ & Kidd’s is a classic example.
