Wild Boar Tusks

A pair of part fossilised Wild Boar tusks, discoloured red and mounted within a red painted tin display case caught the room’s eye in one of our Sporting auctions.

A hand-written label pasted on the inside of the tin stated ‘Wild Boar Tusks, discovered about 2 miles east of Kirkby Stephen, Westmoreland by the Cleveland Mining Co. while searching for iron ore, they were found in a pocket of ore about one foot from the surface’. Consigned from a local vendor, after an intense bid war in the room they sold for £600!
